![]() ![]() Cheaper alternatives are no power generator board or even a cheap DC motor. Note, that speed stability was always close to perfect because of our expensive AC motor synchronization (or in other words the built-in power generator board, as mentioned above). The result is an even quieter and noiseless operation and less wow and flutter - more stable speeds. Because the TPE is mounted on an outer ring, the moving energy will also create a flywheel effect. Our TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) technology now helps to damp it completely and also increases the weight to 1,7 kg. But because of the metal it was resonating. Our old platter was heavier than anybody else’s. So, it was not easy to find improvements without the price exploding: We have a power generator board, producing the cleanest power for the motor, resulting in the most accurate and stable speeds – the rest just takes power directly from the wall ![]() We already have a 1,2kg heavy platter – the rest uses a 300g plastic platter We already have a one-piece tonearm – the rest has a glued together tonearm with many small plastic pieces We already have a semi-symmetric, excellent sounding and wonderfully crafted phono cable – the rest uses cheap cables that look like you can rip them apart with your bear hands We already have a motor suspension – the rest is screwed, or even worse glued in We have a heavy MDF chassis 8x lacquered or with real wood veneer – the rest has lightweight cheap plastic or particle board chassis with plastic veneers, a lot of air enclosure We already have a 100€ cartridge – the rest uses 30€ or even lesser cartridges We already have a carbon tonearm – the rest uses aluminum or even cheap plastic It was not easy, as the Debut is already close to perfect, especially when it comes to price/performance and the materials used for production: The Debut sold in great numbers and has been the top selling turntable in Europe and America Replacing the Debut Carbon turntable wasn't easy. The Pro-Ject with its Sumiko Rainier still sounded better, however. ![]() I tried my reference Rega Planar 3 with the Ortofon 2M Blue and while it offered a similarly forward balance it was more tempered, not steely like the Fluance could be. The Pro-Ject again showed better balance and a finely honed delineation between Cave's baritone and the deep bassline. The OM10 cartridge in the less-expensive Fluance RT82 is a well balanced cartridge, but the step up to the 2M Blue in the RT85 will be too much for already-bright systems. Unless you have a mellow sounding system, the Fluance RT85 seems like one upgrade too far. I heard the Fluance's forwardness again on Nick Cave's Red Right Hand, and here the bass also threatened to become boomy. Spaces is not exactly an edge-of-your-seat kind of recording, so the Pro-Ject's more relaxed approach worked better here. ![]() The Fluance made the recording sound more detailed but it was also two dimensional - it seemed to exist only on the plane between the speakers. The Pro-Ject enhanced the record's ambient qualities, making the room seem like it extended deep into the space in front of me. By the same token the Fluance can sound too forward with some tracks, while the Pro-Ject offers more of a sense of space, which is especially great for big room sounds like Nils Frahm's Spaces. ![]()
